Applications are now available for the public to propose
resource management projects that benefit federal lands associated with the
Deschutes and Ochoco National Forests. The deadline for submitting project
proposals is March 3, 2003.
This is an opportunity for local citizens, community organizations and
groups to propose natural resource projects under the provisions of Title
II of the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act of
2000. In addition to benefiting our national forest resources, this
legislation seeks improved cooperative relationships and the creation of
employment opportunities. Anyone may propose a project that improves
forest ecosystem health, restores or maintains watersheds, accomplishes
road, trail or infrastructure maintenance or obliteration, restores or
improves fish and wildlife habitat, removes noxious weeds, thins tree
stands, reestablishes native species or otherwise improves Forest
conditions.
Applications for the Title II projects can be found at
http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/centraloregon (click on “In the Spotlight” and scroll down
to Deschutes Ochoco RAC) or can be picked up at the Ochoco National Forest
Headquarters at 3160 NE Third Street, Prineville, Oregon 97754 or the
Deschutes National Forest Headquarters, 1645 Hwy 20 E, Bend, Oregon 97701.
The Deschutes Ochoco RAC will host a workshop on January 22nd to answer
questions and provide tips on filling out the application package. The
workshop will be held from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. at the Central Oregon
Intergovernmental Council office, 2363 Glacier Place, Redmond. Those
interested in submitting an application are encouraged to attend.
The Deschutes and Ochoco RAC will meet in June to review the project
proposals and recommend projects to Leslie Weldon, Designated Federal
Official (DFO) for the RAC and Deschutes National Forest Supervisor.
