With school back in session this week and a calm in the weather before the next snowfall, the Bend Police Department would like to encourage all members of the community to properly maintain their sidewalks by clearing snow and ice in a timely manner.
This is to ensure safe passage for pedestrian traffic, especially for children who walk to and from school and elderly residents who walk to neighborhood services.
When sidewalks are not clear, pedestrians are forced to walk in the streets, putting them in a potentially hazardous situation with auto traffic.
The City of Bend requires that all commercial areas clear their sidewalks within 6 hours after a snow fall and one day for all other areas, including neighborhoods. Failure to clear your sidewalk of snow may result in a $100 fine by the City of Bend.
If you have concerns about an area of sidewalk blocked by snow or dangerous by ice, please attempt to resolve any snow & ice removal issues with your neighbor or a business before filing a complaint with the City. If you have a neighbor that is physically unable to clear his or her sidewalk, please be a good neighbor and offer your assistance.
If you find yourself in a situation where a neighbor or a business continues to refuse to remove the snow from their sidewalk, please feel free to contact Code Compliance Officer James Goff at 312-4908.
