The bridge at Sawyer Park, originally constructed in the 1950′s, has deteriorated beyond repair, but a new, steel span is on the way.
The construction project to replace the bridge is scheduled to begin Sept.7 and will be completed in early October.
During the construction project, the park will remain open. Park visitors can access the east side of the park off O.B. Riley Road and can access the west side of the park from the Deschutes River Trail, off Mt. Washington Drive. When the project is completed, the east and west sides of the park will be connected once again.
A portion of the $120,000 construction cost is funded by a matching Land and Water Conservation Fund grant.
The project includes the removal of the existing bridge, construction of concrete bridge supports, and placement of the new bridge.
The new 180-foot steel bridge is prefabricated in three sections. A large crane will place the three sections together from the west side of the park. Visitors to the park should use caution near the construction site, park district officials said.
